Helen Rushforth, BA (Hons), RGN, RSCN, DipNSc, RNT

University of Southampton School of Nursing and Midwifery, South Academic Block, Southampton General Hospital, Tremona Road, Southampton SO16 6YD

Catherine Powell, BNSc (Hons), RGN, RSCN, RHV

{blacksquare} The use of the term 'general nurse' in a recent national recruitment advertising campaign may reveal a hidden agenda with significant implications for children's nursing

{blacksquare} This concern presents a catalyst for re-examining the preparation of children's nursing practitioners

{blacksquare} Children's nurses on part 15 of the register face professional discrimination both nationally and internationally

{blacksquare} Reform of the preparation of children's nurses is needed to take such discrimination into account in order to optimise their education and to maximise the national and international currency of their qualification

{blacksquare} The fundamental principle that children must be cared for by children's nurses must remain inviolate

Key Words: Generalist • Children's nurse education • Pre- registration education • Recruitment
