Child mental health: promoting prevention

Steven Walker

School of Community Health and Social Studies, Anglia Polytechnic University

{blacksquare} The increasing demand for Child Mental Health Services in Britain is producing pressure on managers and clinicians to find different ways to heip.

{blacksquare} Government targets for improving quality and reducing waiting times for assessment and treatment are stretching resources.

{blacksquare} This study, at a local community child and family consultation clinic, investigated the characteristics of the increased demand, expectations and experiences of clients.

{blacksquare} The results highlight the need for better preventative services, improved multi- agency liaison, and less reliance on short- term treatments.

{blacksquare} Evaluation in Child Mental Health Services could be enhanced by gaining the views of children and adolescents with independent interviewers.

Key Words: Children • Community • Demand, Evaluation • Family • Mental Health • Prevention, Targets.
