Claire Anderson

Dip Child Health, ENB A13, BSc (Hons), Teaching Sister, PICU, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust

{blacksquare} There is an unacceptably high incidence of malnutrition in PICU.

{blacksquare} The delivery of nutritional support requires a structured approach.

{blacksquare} Early enteral feeding has been shown to reduce the stress response.

{blacksquare} Implementing a change in practice involves identification of resources, objectives and motivation for change.

{blacksquare} A randomised retrospective audit of the change in practice did demonstrate the value of earlier commencement of enteral feeding.

{blacksquare} Informal interviews with practitioners suggested improved practice and knowledge.

Key Words: Change • Enteral feeding, Malnutrition • Nutrition • Paediatric intensive care • Practice.
